Founded by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown in 2011, the messaging app overnight gained success because it began as a means for sharing ephemeral content that would automatically delete itself after 24 hours.

The unique value proposition of Snap is the nature of the content that was ephemeral. Therefore, the application provided a means through which the users were able to forward their snaps: photos and videos that self-destruct once opened, thus appealing chiefly to people who seek casual and private social media experiences.
